Providers at health centers in 12 high-risk counties will be taught about breast health in African American women, including appropriate breast cancer screening guidelines. Additionally, providers will learn what risk factors make an individual higher-risk for breast cancer and how to refer these individuals for genetic counseling/genetic testing.
The 12 high-risk counties include:
- Southwest Ohio: Butler, Clark, and Hamilton counties
- Central Ohio: Franklin and Fairfield counties
- Northeast Ohio: Cuyahoga, Lake, Lorain, Mahoning, Summit, Stark, and Trumbull counties
Breast Cancer STATS & FACTS for Ohio
All participating health centers will be asked to provide metrics to determine the effectiveness of the program at promoting breast cancer screening and genetic counseling/testing. Providers in participating health centers will be provided with an educational session, as described above, which will educate providers about breast health, screening and genetic counseling and/or testing. With the assistance of these clinic partners, we can reduce breast cancer and breast cancer mortality in Ohio.
Providers (all staff) at FQHCs in the 12 selected counties will be approached and asked to participate in educational sessions, one-on-one meetings, and other types of strategies to facilitate the goals of the project. Clinic leaders and clinic champions at each FQHC will recruit their own clinic staff to participate.
Risk assessment helps researchers, clinicians, and other providers determine if an individual is at higher risk for certain health outcomes. In the case of breast cancer, we can determine whether an individual may be at higher risk for breast cancer by asking specific questions, including questions about personal as well as family history of breast cancer.
Genetic counseling is the process of reviewing an individual's family history in detail to see how likely it is that they have a family cancer syndrome. Genetic counselors can describe genetic testing and explain what the tests might be able to tell a patient, which can help them decide if genetic testing is right for them.
