Meet Nona Fullen and her daughter, Sherri DeArmond. Both are breast cancer survivors and both have an important story to share regarding their journeys.
“My name is Nona Fullen and my journey began on June 14, 2017. I went in for my mammogram as usual. A few days later, I received a call from the Imaging Center wanting me to come in for another mammogram and ultrasound because the first one was questionable. After the doctor read the ultrasound, he came in and told me there was a spot in my left breast and that he was pretty sure it was cancer. Long story short, after the biopsy and seeing an oncologist, it was confirmed that I had triple negative breast cancer. I had a lumpectomy, chemo treatments and radiation. Today, three years strong, I am cancer free and in remission. I thank the Lord for the strength he has given me. I also thank my family, my friends, my church family, and the doctors and nurses for the support given to me. This was not the end of my journey because two years later, my daughter was diagnosed with the same type of breast cancer. Thanks be to God that she is also cancer free and in remission.”
“My name is Sherri DeArmond. My first journey began in 2017 when my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. I didn’t want to believe it, but my mother said, “It is, what it is and it is not a death sentence”. Two years later, I was diagnosed and began my cancer journey in 2019. I took the same approach as my mother “It is what it is and it is not a death sentence”. I knew God was covering us because I watched her go through it like a champ. Ladies, and gentlemen, self-checks are important. If I had not practiced self-checks, I would not have found the lump as early as I did. Once I felt the lump, I made an appointment with my doctor who scheduled me to have a mammogram and ultrasound. After the ultrasound, the radiologist informed me that a biopsy was needed to confirm her suspicions. In March of 2019, just like my mother, I was diagnosed with Triple Negative Breast Cancer. After chemotherapy and radiation, I had a lumpectomy. When I lost my hair, I thought I would be devastated, but I actually handled it pretty well. Did I have down days? Of course, but I stayed positive because I have victory in Jesus. I am thankful for the love and support of my husband, children, family, church family, friends and medical team. Today my mother and I are cancer free and breast cancer survivors.”
